Q: HOW MUCH TIME SHOULD I BOOK ON MY WEDDING DAY?
A: The best thing to do is work with your wedding photographer on your wedding photography timeline, because there are many things that will factor into this question. Some factors include: how many bridesmaids and groomsmen you have, if you're dressing in a different place than your ceremony location, if your reception is in a different location, drive times to each location, how many formals you expect, etc.
With all of that said, if you are having your preparation, ceremony, and reception in the same place, you have less than 4 bridesmaids/groomsmen, you have a very small formals list, and you only want the first hour of your reception, then 8 hours will likely be sufficient!
Q: HOW MUCH TIME DO I NEED FOR MY FORMALS?
A: We factor in 3 minutes per shot/grouping. It may sound like an excessive amount of time, but it's actually quite realistic. I recommend at least 2 hours before the ceremony of pre-formals and 2 hours after the ceremony for post-formals of family photographs, wedding party photographs, and the couple alone. In the example below I have calculated 1 Hour and 12 minutes for pre-formals for the Bride alone. In this real world example it would likely take the same amount of time for the Groom's. This would put the pre-formals at 2 Hours and 30 Minutes.
Q: HOW SHOULD I WRITE OUT MY FORMALS LIST?
A: Your formals list should be written out by shot. For example you would have a pre-ceremony and post-ceremony list. For your Pre-Ceremony list you will likely have family members and wedding party shots with just the bride alone and the groom alone.

30+42= 1 Hour & 12 Minutes
Q: WHO DO I GIVE MY FORMALS LISTS TO?
A: Your formals list will go to your photographer first, so they can tell you how it looks and make any suggestions or changes. You will then discuss the time with your planner, and give them the list. You will also give the list to the person you want to be responsible for gathering the people together as well as marking them off and going down the list. Your wedding photography team cannot be responsible for gathering people they don't know, and they need to be focusing on their job posing, arranging, and taking the photographs.
